The Little Moments Become the Biggest Memories
There is something special about being a grandparent. We get to see life through little eyes once again—the excitement of blowing bubbles, picking dandelions, baking cookies, or reading the same bedtime story for the hundredth time. As the years go by, I’ve learned that children won’t remember every toy they received or every outing we planned. What they’ll treasure most are the moments when they felt loved, safe, and important.
In a world that moves so quickly, it’s easy to think we need elaborate vacations or expensive gifts to create lasting memories. The truth is, the greatest gift we can give our children and grandchildren is our time. Sitting on the porch watching the sunset, planting flowers together, or sharing laughter over a board game often becomes the memory they carry into adulthood.
Love Is Spelled T-I-M-E
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that children don’t ask for perfection—they simply want our attention.
When you set aside your phone, turn off the television, and truly listen, you’re telling a child, “You matter to me.” Those quiet conversations while coloring, building blocks, or taking a walk are opportunities to build trust that lasts a lifetime.
Even just fifteen or twenty minutes of uninterrupted time can strengthen your bond more than hours spent in the same room distracted by other things.
Celebrate the Ordinary
Some of my favorite memories weren’t made during holidays or birthdays. They happened on ordinary Tuesday afternoons.
We baked muffins that didn’t rise quite right.
We danced around the living room in our socks.
We built blanket forts and read books with flashlights.
We watched ladybugs crawl across the sidewalk.
Children have an amazing ability to find joy in the simplest things. As adults, we sometimes forget that magic exists in everyday moments.
Encourage Curiosity
Whenever a child asks, “Why?” I try to remember they’re not trying to wear us out—they’re trying to understand the world.
Instead of always giving the answer, ask questions back.
“What do you think?”
“How could we find out?”
“Let’s discover it together.”
Curiosity grows into confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.
Simple educational toys, puzzles, sensory activities, and hands-on projects can turn everyday play into wonderful learning experiences while still feeling like fun.
Kindness Is Always Worth Teaching
Children watch far more than they listen.
They notice how we treat neighbors.
How we speak to strangers.
How we respond when things don’t go our way.
Small acts of kindness leave lasting impressions.
Bake cookies for a neighbor.
Write a thank-you note.
Donate toys they’ve outgrown.
Help someone carry groceries.
These little lessons quietly teach children what it means to care for others.
Don’t Worry About Perfect
If you’re a parent or grandparent, chances are you’ve wondered if you’re doing enough.
The answer is probably yes.
Children don’t need perfect homes.
They don’t need perfect vacations.
They don’t need perfect parents or grandparents.
They need people who love them unconditionally.
The hugs.
The bedtime stories.
The sillysongs.
The scraped-knee kisses.
The encouragement after a difficult day.
Those are the things they’ll remember.
From Grandma’s Heart
If I could leave one piece of wisdom with every family, it would be this:
Slow down.
Laugh a little longer.
Take more pictures—but don’t forget to be in them.
Read one more story.
Give one more hug.
Because childhood passes far more quickly than we expect, but the love we pour into those little hearts lasts forever.
At From Grandma’s Heart, we believe every day offers a new opportunity to create memories that children will carry with them for years to come. Whether it’s through imaginative play, meaningful gifts, educational activities, or simply spending time together, it’s never about having the most—it’s about making the most of the moments you share.
So this week, I encourage you to choose one simple activity to enjoy with a child you love. Bake together. Go for a walk. Read a favorite book. Build a fort. Laugh often.
Years from now, those ordinary moments may become their favorite memories.
